SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES:
Group travel abroad scholarships provided by Students Going Global are awarded to global education programs across Detroit to support travel abroad opportunities for Detroit youth.
Applications for support from global education program sponsors at schools, churches and nonprofit organizations in Detroit must be received within the month of October for Educational Tours Abroad departing in the Summer. The Scholarship Committee will review all fully completed applications in November of each year and notify awardees in the month of December.
Purpose: To empower Detroit youth through global travel
Group Travel Abroad Scholarships: Group travel abroad scholarships provided by Students Going Global total $1,000 max. per student traveler and $5,000 max. per group.
Eligible Programs: After school global education programs located at various schools, churches and nonprofit organizations in Detroit that include an annual Educational Tour Abroad, typically 9-15 days in duration, through reputable travel program providers that specialize in all-inclusive, pre-packaged Educational Tours Abroad for elementary, middle and high school students.
Eligible Students: Qualifying students must be an active member of an after-school global education program at a public, private or charter school in Detroit or at a Detroit based church or nonprofit organization and meet and maintain the following requirements to qualify for a travel abroad scholarship from Students Going Global: 1) Live in Detroit and attend a Detroit area school (Grades 5-12) 2) Have and maintain a 2.5 GPA with no D’s or F’s 3) Provide two letters of recommendation from teachers 4) Provide a signed consent form from parent/guardian to travel abroad 5) Submit a resume with evidence of personal commitment to academic, social and personal growth as demonstrated through involvements in various out of class learning experiences 6) Demonstrate financial need to receive financial assistance to travel abroad 7) Participate in all program fundraising events to help raise total costs to travel abroad 8) Attend after-school global education program meetings regularly
Eligible Global Education Partners: Our global education partners are global education program sponsors throughout Detroit at Detroit based schools, churches or nonprofit organizations. Program Sponsors serve as a reference and advocate for the student in the application process. Program Sponsors also serve as the point of contact to facilitate communication with student participants. Program sponsors must submit a letter of approval to travel abroad from the school’s principal, church pastor or nonprofit CEO. Group Travel Scholarships awarded to student participants by Students Going Global are submitted directly to the Program Sponsor on behalf of the student participants.
Application Submission Procedure: Applications for support are accepted within the month of October of each year. The global education program sponsor is responsible for collaborating with student participants to ensure that the Group Travel Application is complete and submitted by the deadline, including all requested and supporting documents, such as a student list with contact information, student transcripts/report cards, student resumes, a tour itinerary with tour costs and activities, signed letter of approval to travel abroad with students from school’s principal, church pastor or nonprofit CEO and other pertinent information when applying for support. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application Deadline: Applications for support are only accepted within the month of October of each year. The Scholarship Committee will meet in November of each year to consider all fully completed applications received by the deadline date of October 31. Program Sponsors will be notified in the month of December.
